SENATOR" PETTIGREW8 AMEND MENT WILL PROBABLY PASS. Putting All Article Controlled by Trusts on the Free List McKinley None the Worse for His Trip. By Telegrraoh to The News. Washington, June 15. Senator Pettigrew has received assurances from Senators Nelson, Carter and Hausbrongh that they will support his amendment to the tariff bill placing on the free list all articles and manufactures which in this country are controlled by any trust. These Senators are Kepublicans. Their votes will Becure the adoption of the amendment. This is au en tirely unlooked for feature in tariff legislation. BACK IN WASHINGTON. The Presidential party arrived on schedule time this morning over the Southern Railway from Asheville Maj. McKinley did not suffer from fatigue during the night's journey, and was in his office soon after nine o'clock this morning. Lindsay's amendment defeated The tariff bill was taken up in the Senate this morning and Senator Lindsay's amendment to strike out the duty on sugar of 195 and insert 1.80 cents per pound was considered. Senator Caffrey, of Louisiana, made a speech in its favcr. The amend ment was defeated by a vote of thirty-two ayes and thirty five noes. CUBAN PETITION A "FAKE " The "monster" Cuban petition which was introduc d in the house yesterday and which was intended to make the subjec" for a dramatic episode has dwindled from six mil lion signatures to less than fifteen thousand. Officials of the Union steamship company this morning confirm the news of the death of Barney Barnato, the most noted of the South African million aires. A dispatch from Funcha, Island of Madeira, eff the West coaEt of Moroco, last night, savs that the British steamship Scott, which left fable Bay (Cape Town) on June 2, for Southampton, announced that Barney Barnato, the South African diamond king, who was among the passengers, had committed suicide by leaping overboard. Charles Broadway Rouss, the millionaire merchant and philanthropist who is now blind and offers $1,000,000 for the restoration of his eye sight, has presented to the University of Vir ginia a handsome building equipped with every facility and apparatus for scientific research and investiga tion. It is to be dedicated during the commencement exercises of the institution this week. He had in tended to attend the commencement aud take part in the dedicatory ex ercises. Today he announces that he will not attend the dedication at Char lottesville because William J. Bryan, the late Democratic candidate for the presidency, is to be present and to make the annual address. Washington, June lo. lhe 01- ficial government report shows gen eral improvement in cotton through out the cotton Delt, tne improvement being more marked in South Caro lina and Georgia, than elsewhere. The crop is generally clean of grass and insects are less numerous than in previous years. The Texas crop needs warm dry weather over the northern portion of the State where the growth has been slow, and some necessitated re planting ; continues; while showers would prove beneficial in other sec tions of the State. , - Southern Railway Eafwings. : New York, June 12. Presi dent McKinley is preparing a note to Spain containing tho administra tion's ultimatum in regard to Cuba, which will cover the whole ground. J udge Day, Assistant Secretary of State, Las the work in hand. Special Commissioner Calhoun's report has made no material change in the wording or purpose of the ultima tum. The information secured by his personal visit to Cuba and inves tigation of the Buiz case, is in the nature of cumulative or confirma tory evidence. Seuor Dupuy DeLome, the Spanish minister, has been officially informed of trie attitude of the administration and its contemplated purpose in sending a note offering mediation on the batii of independence of the Island, with the payment of an indemnity. Minister DeLome replied adroitly that Spain wound not onsider the note. The note will say that Spain has lost control of Cuba and the areas controlled by the armies of the Insurgents and the Spanish forces will be outlined and contrasted BROKER CHAPMAN FREE. Elverton It. Chapman's sentence expired at midnight la3t nighr, but according to the custom be -was allowed to remain until this morn ing, though he could have left when the clock struck twelve. The broker took breakfast from the Arlington menu, but breakfasted at the jail, and spent over an hour looking over his mail. He waited for bis friends who had arranged to call with a carriige. Company "K." with fifty men left for Huntsviile this morning to de feed Ih? two nrgrcts in the jail there who are threatened with lynch ing by a mob from Decatur. It is feared there will be a bloody riot. The mob is a determined one. The troops have been ordered out by the sheriff who is determined to defend his prisoners at all cost. The negroes are charged with assaulting a young white girl only twelve years of age. GOROY HANGED TODAY Delaware Wife Murderer Pays the Death Penalty for his Ci ime. y Telegraph to The News. Georgetown, Del June 11. James M Gordy, the noted wife murderer, was hanged in the jail here at 10:20 o'clock this morning. He declared on the scaffold that he was innocent. A strong effort has been made for Gordy's pardon, and several petitions have been presented to the governor asking a commutation of the death sentence. In view of the lynchings in Ohio and the lynching Wednesday in the neighboring State of Mary land, Gordy feared that a mob might take him out and lynch him G01 dy murdered his wife in a peculiarly brutal manner; hi3 trial was one of the most noted in the criminal record of the State. Hatch, Thurston and Kinnpy on the p;irt of the Hawaiian Republic. The document will at once be sub mitted" to the Senate, and considered by that body iu executive session. It is not known what fate it will meet there, but the friends of Hawaii claim that the treat)' of airuCTa'io!i will be promptly ratified. Further ujimigralioa of Chinese laborers is prohibited. Pending congressional action, the entry of Chinese from Hawaii 'into the United States is also prohibited. The United States assumes the pub iin utbt of Hawaii, but stipulates that this liability shall not exceed 4,000,000. Tne govern meat of Hawaii cedes to the United S'ates absolutely and forever -all right of s ivereigntv'in aud over the Hawaiian Islands and its dept-mL-ncies, and provides that the Islands shall become an integral part of tne Uniteel States. Hawaii cedes all public lands, public buildings and public property of every description. Congress shall enact special laws to govern the disposition of lands in the Hawaiian Islands. The treaty before becoming effect ive shall be ratified by the proper authorities of the United Stales and Hawaii. The only specific offense charged against the defendents U that they conspired to control the sale of paper ei'narettes in the State of 2sew York by ref using to sell their goods except at a price, tixed by them, and that they sell their goods only to persons who have agreed not to aell the goods of other manufacturers.
